One major difference with Empire over other Total War games is the emphasis on ranged combat. Our session began during a battle's deployment phase, which if you're not familiar with is where you set up all your troops in the formations you like before clicking a button to begin the action. It seems CA intends for this to serve as not only as a change of pace from the open-ended standard campaign, but also as a kind of tutorial for players who may not be that familiar with the way Total War games tend to work. Throughout the course of an episode you receive objectives that direct focus of the gameplay on things like taking specific towns or stopping specific armies. There's also more structure here than you'd find in the grand campaign, something we didn't actually get to see. Each episode isn't just a mission they're actually mini-campaigns with timelines appropriate for the conflicts, and feature battles as well as map management. As we loaded into episode three, Washington paced around and delivered dialogue outlining his motivations for going to war in a brief cut-scene. In the third episode, the one we got to play for the demo, the focus is on the war for independence, and you play as American forces under general Washington as they attempt to kick out the British. In the second you play as a combination of the British soldiers and Virginia colonists as they tangle with the French. The mode proceeds through three episodes, the first being the defense of Jamestown against Native American tribes. One of the more notable additions is a Road to Independence mode, something that follows the founding of the colony at Jamestown through to the eventual revolt. Controlling ships at sea isn't the only new feature in Empire. Whereas before the fights were mostly on land, this time around players have the option to engage in fully controllable tactical skirmishes between fleets instead of abstracted conflicts. Since 2000's Shogun: Total War CA has been busy tweaking and refining its formula of Civilization-style overworld map management with large-scale real-time tactical battles.
